This
week I am monitoring my GAME plan progress.
To begin I will refresh everyone on my goals. My first goal is to personalize learning
activities to address the diverse needs of my heritage speakers using digital
tools and resources. My second goal is
to model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness through integrating
new technology tools in my lessons.
For my GAME plan I am finding some of the resources I need but I am
still struggling with some of my ideas.
For my
goal about heritage speakers I am reviewing their last writing prompt and STAMP
assessment scores to see their areas of need when it comes to a Voice Stream
project. I have decided to move forward
with this idea due to the positive response from my Walden colleagues. On the STAMP assessment I noticed that none
of my heritage speakers scored in the “advanced” category and that, as we
review the data together, they do not agree that they are less than “advanced”
in the speaking category. A Voice Stream
project will support their writing and will also allow them to showcase their
true speaking ability. I feel that this
project will support their linguistic needs but in looking at our curriculum
guide their Voice Stream project will most likely need to deal with camping,
nature, or myths/legends if I want to have them complete this project during the
period of this Walden class. To me I do
not feel that these topics do not lend themselves to a Voice Stream. Of course students could record a legend but
they have to write one as an assessment already and legends do not necessarily
require comments. Do any of my Walden
colleagues have ideas for related topics or how I could work a Voice Stream
into our current topics? I am having a
serious creative block.
For
my second goal about modeling innovative thinking thorough modeling new
technology tools I have been able to explore Voki as suggested by a Walden
colleage, Zambombazo as suggested by a work colleage and the blog created by
Larry Ferlazzo as suggested by a Walden colleague. As I tried Voki it was engaging to pick a
character but somehow my microphone was not working to allow me to save and upload
my Voki so I will have to try again. When
I get it working I hope to upload it to my blog as practice. I can see how this application would allow
students to feel more comfortable. I also like how you can share Vokis so
easily. I plan on working with Voki more
and once I have the kinks out I will definitely be modeling this and deciding
if I want to pay for the yearly subscription out of my budget!
The
Zambombazo site at http://zachary-jones.com/zambombazo/
that was suggested to me by someone at work has a lot of great resources but
they are not necessarily involving technology.
That site offers authentic songs, worksheets, comics, humor, pictures,
photos, current events and more. It is a
website full of current materials and could be a good resource to use with
other technology based resources. One
section I do like is called “internet” where they scan the internet for
interesting or important events of the week in the Spanish speaking world. This particular section could be a way for me
to incorporate recent and inventive topics in my class or could serve as a
basis for inquiry projects.
I also
looked at the blog suggested by a Walden colleague at larryferlazzo@edublogs.org. That site is focused on teaching ELL and ESL
rather than Spanish but I did find that it has good education and educational
technology related posts. My next action
step is to look for more educational technology blogs that I can subscribe to
so I can model additional technologies. I would
like to look for 2-3 more other applications to model for my students. I want to be sure that I am using multiple
strategies because they will benefit my students regarding the language and
topic.
I have not
needed to modify my action plan but I am finding it difficult to incorporate
the activities at this time due to where I am in the unit as I said previously. I am very open to input or suggestions if
anyone has any! My new questions for suggestions
are “Which educational blogs are the best for new technology tools?” And “how
can I incorporate Voice Stream in my current topic focus?”
There are
two key realizations I have made so far in this process. First I have learned that this GAME plan process
is extremely creative in nature. In my
creative thinking process I have identified my goal, used background knowledge
and brainstormed so now I am at the point of looking at alternative options and
perspectives to make my final reflective judgment (Laureate Education Inc.,
2010). This makes me feel that I have
made progress and I have a clear action plan for continuing to monitor and
implement my plan.
I have
also learned that that I need to be clearer about my strategies and choose more
specific applications. For me this is a
misstep in the “action” part of my plan to meet my goals. According to Cennamo, Ross and Ertmer (2009)
it is essential to look for required resources and select strategies in the
action phase of the plan and that is what I am setting out to do. I feel I am on track to do this through my
research and new thought process. My
GAME plan is shaping up nicely as I learn new technologies!

Voki is a very interesting website. The issue I am going to have with it is that if I require the students to sign up for anything online, I need to go to our school board, present it to them, then let them decide, and finally, it needs to pass a vote. I am using Edmodo with my students this year and that took a little while to get approved. It is a safety measure we have at our school so that the board knows what the students are signing up for. I have found though that there are times that becomes a hassle but I understand why they need to do it.
ReplyDeleteWhat are your plans for using Voki? You said that you are going to try it in a blog. Is this the extent of this plan, or are you thinking you are going to have the students sign up as well and then somehow use that in a blog as well? I would be curious about seeing where this goes because I agree that I think it would make the students seem more comfortable and if it seems to be working for you, it might be something I pursue a little more.
Thanks for your post! I enjoyed reading it!
Dan,
ReplyDeleteThere is no policy that requires me to have something passed for students to sign up for a website but my current problem is that I want to be sure that the technology I have at school with work with Voki before I sign up. I had an avatar and audio but I could not re-record. I tried to do that because I know students will want to re-do recordings multiple times. I am going to try again next week when I am back at work to see if our headphones with built-in microphones will work with Voki.
To clarify the question you asked I wanted to try to use Voki to put it on this education blog to practice posting it to other locations. I feel that students could blog or possibly even put their Vokis on my class website and respond to them using blogging as an extension. This is simply something I am thinking of for the future. Because it will make students feel more comfortable I think it could support the interpersonal mode of communication and the presentational mode of communication. It could be great feedback for students to get comments from me and classmates on their Voki (especially if they worked really hard on it).
I am definitely going to pursue Voki more because I really like it and it supports my GAME plan. I am very thankful that you suggested it! I am also thankful that we are sharing so much during this class! On that note please let me know if you did not receive my e-mail with the document on digital citizenship and I will send the document again! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Jennifer, I wish i could be of assistance to you in regards to the heritage speaker Voice Thread. Why do you feel as if one of the topics such as nature, wildlife or legends/myths does not make good material for a Voice Stream? I take it,these students are in need of help with their writing skills and the Voice Thread is one way to aide the students with this? I'm sorry, I guess I have more questions than answers. Initially, I was under the impression that you taught ELL; however, as I read further down, you obviously teach Spainish. If I understood correctly, they thought their STAMP assessment would fall in the advanced category. Is something limiting you to strictly using myths/legends, wildlife, and nature or can it involve hobbies each student enjoys during their free time?
ReplyDeleteMy apologies, I do not know what the STAMP assessment is but I will assume it is a Spanish writing and vocalizing test assessment?
This is a bit of a side note- at the high school I was just transferred from, for those students that wished to learn Spanish, it was taught with a certified Spanish teacher in one of the several Spanish computer labs, and the students learned at their own pace through the computer software. What bothers me about this set up is the high school had a para-pro in the computer classrooms for kids that failed an academic class and had to re-take it. If one fails an academic course the first time, the next year, he/she is taking the class online. To me, one needs a certified teacher or two in the academic "make-up" computer lab, as much so/if not mores so, than a certified teacher in the Spanish lab. Just my two cents worth... I never got a full grasp on that. The Spanish teacher is making close to $70,000 a year, while the para-pro has roughly 28 students per class period, making at best $19,000 a year. WHere is the justification in that? Has your school system tried this approach before?
Back on topic, I have never heard of Voki before; it sounds as if it would be similar to Voice Thread or the Audacity voice software we had to use for the 3rd or 4th course during our Walden adventure? From what I gather regarding your progress with your two goals, you have made tremendous strides and advancement in finding more technology software and components than you are giving yourself credit for. My hats off to you. I think with the road we have ahead of us (less than one month away), you are doing really well with your GAME PLAN progress.
Lori,
DeleteThank you for all of your feedback! I appreciate what you said.
Many of my heritage speakers come into my class with the preconceived notion that they do not have much to learn or improve on. The STAMP test results this year showed them that they do. We had a long talk about how this computer based test worked and why things were scored the way they were. When we analyzed the results many of them voiced that they did not feel the results reflected their true skill. I want to give them a chance to do that through Voice Stream. I am concerned that the topics right now are not something that will require a lot of feedback or interaction from other students. If I ask them to talk about what they do in their free time they might slip back into simple topics rather than more complex things. Then again those are things that the other students would feel comfortable leaving comments about so I might actually do that.
In my district we have never allowed students to simply learn Spanish using a computer program. Not only does the situation you described sound unethical, it also sounds like it would not benefit students. I do not think this sort of thing will ever be allowed in my particular school district. If students do not receive credit they must retake the course.
You are very right about Voki. It is a podcast with an avatar that speaks. It is sort of a way I can see to make podcasting even more fun and less intimidating (which is always a plus)!
Thank you again for your comment! We are well on our way with our GAME plans. I hope you are feeling better since I commented on your blog earlier this week!
